Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.
-- W. B. Yeats
The Huron County IVD team consist of students from the seven public schools in Huron County, Michigan. The IVD project is an exciting and unique opportunity for high school students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The Square One Education Foundation is the sponsor of this project and works with teams from across Michigan and the Mid-west. Square One works with corporate sponsors to pair up teams with both sponsors and mentors (engineers) who work with the students/teams during the duration of the project. Student teams with lead teachers and mentor engineers use a limited budget during a 1-year time frame (October - May) to design and build an electric (battery-driven) vehicle that incorporates innovation. Each year a theme is determined so that teams have a direction to work toward (ex. safety, hybridization, electrification, "smart" technology). Additionally, as part of the overall project, students work on an ambassadorship outreach program that reflects some aspect of the vehicle they are working on, typically related to engineering or science, and then share this project (activity) with junior high-age students in order to build excitement and knowledge in their younger peers toward science and engineering.
The Huron County IVD team has been involved in the Innovative Vehicle Design project for over a decade. Originally IVD was a 2-year cycle and has now transitioned into a 1 year (fall to spring) project. The Huron County IVD team has enjoyed this unique opportunity and have experienced great success along the way. The culminating event for IVD (formerly held at Michigan International Speedway) now takes place on Belle Isle on the Detroit Grand Prix race course with student teams performing on a variety of tracks.
